In the old days, English butchers used this breed to catch bull that they could slaughter. I know, it seems kind of silly considering the size of these dogs but it was done, all the time. They have a very strong build as well as a strong jaw to help them with this process.
English Bulldogs are very gentle and loving animals. You wouldn't think so by the looks of them but trust me, they are lovers. They are also good around children, even small children so no worries there. They aren't super hyper dogs either, they wear out and over-heat easily so they don't prefer too much strenuous activity. These dogs would be happy with a nice leisurely stroll once a day.
If you raise your Bulldog well and socialize them as you should, you will have a sweet and gentle dog. They do however, have some aggression issues when it comes to their food or a bone. They are just a bit protective over it so it's best to leave them alone while they are eating. Bulldogs make great companions and they will get you a lot of attention while walking down the road, everyone wants to pet him!
