Most Common Bulldog Health Problems

Most all dog breeds have a list of common health issues and concerns that need to be addressed or that you just need to be aware of. They are fantastic animals but there are a few things you should know if you already have one or are planning on getting one.

The English Bulldog breed is not the kind of dog you take out for long runs or walks especially in the heat. The can get heat stroke very easily. They are considered a heat-sensitive dog breed. Hip Dysplasia is another common problem. It's a joint disease that is common in many other breeds. English Bulldogs with sensitive skin can get Dermatitis which is a skin condition that can be caused by their diet or even their surroundings. Bulldogs also have allergy issues which can be brought on by air fresheners, perfumes or the shampoo that you use on them.

These are just a few common problems that come to mind... if you ever notice anything odd whether it be a skin rash, change in appetite or anything else unusual you should take them into the vet for a check up. Always be aware of what you feed your dog and what you use to bath them.

Bulldog Personality & Temperament

In the old days, English butchers used this breed to catch bull that they could slaughter. I know, it seems kind of silly considering the size of these dogs but it was done, all the time. They have a very strong build as well as a strong jaw to help them with this process.

English Bulldogs are very gentle and loving animals. You wouldn't think so by the looks of them but trust me, they are lovers. They are also good around children, even small children so no worries there. They aren't super hyper dogs either, they wear out and over-heat easily so they don't prefer too much strenuous activity. These dogs would be happy with a nice leisurely stroll once a day.

If you raise your Bulldog well and socialize them as you should, you will have a sweet and gentle dog. They do however, have some aggression issues when it comes to their food or a bone. They are just a bit protective over it so it's best to leave them alone while they are eating. Bulldogs make great companions and they will get you a lot of attention while walking down the road, everyone wants to pet him!

Feeding Your Bulldog

Your dogs diet is very important and contributes to your Bulldogs health in many ways. Many people have made the mistake of just buying the most expensive food thinking that it must be the best one. Well, this couldn't be anymore wrong. Every dog is different so you want to make sure they are getting exactly what they need as well as the right amount.

Maybe your Bulldog has allergies or is sensitive to certain ingredients so you have to be very careful as to which one you purchase. It is trial and error until you find the one that your dog really likes and responds well to. Learn about the ingredients and reading the labels on the dog food. This can help you out tremendously in your decision making. Many times, dog owners have a dog with special needs and take the route of making it themselves. At least this way you know exactly what is going into their body. Raw food diets have become more popular and have proven to be quite beneficial for Bulldogs and other breeds alike.

Set up a time in the morning and in the evening to feed your bulldog. This makes for some consistency and also, if you don't have a dog door for them to come in and out as they please, this will regulate a schedule for them going to the bathroom which is helpful for the both of you. Make sure you are feeding them just the right amount, not too little and not too much. Free feeding is bad and can lead to dog obesity and not enough food can lead to malnutrition and other health issues. Read the bag, do some research or talk to your vet.

Keeping Your Bulldog Healthy

When it comes to keeping your Bulldog healthy, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. A nutritious diet and just the right amount of exercise is at the top of the list. Bulldogs only require a moderate exercise routine since they do over heat very easily but they still need a daily walk.

You want to be sure and check food labels before you give them to your bulldog. Without knowing it you could be feeding him or her a bunch of uneccesary filler that lacks all nutritional benefits needed to keep healthy. This could also lead to dog obesity which can lead to bigger problems down the road. When your dog isn't getting the proper amount of vitamins, minerals and proteins they tend to be more hungry more often and that's exactly what you don't want. Consult your vet if you are having trouble figuring out the right diet for your Bulldog.

Always pay attention to their behavior and their bodies. This is a great way of making sure your dog is in good health, every week! If anything is out of the norm, a bump, rash, odd behavior or anything else that is out of the ordinary you can take them to the vet right away and fix the problem. I always run my hands around their legs, stomach, back, neck and check the ears once a week just to make sure everything looks good.

Having a regular vet that you take your bulldog to is a really smart idea, this way your dog won't be so traumatized everytime they go to the vet, even for a nail trim. They will gain some sort of familiarity with them and that makes everything easier on all of us, especially the pooch.

Breathing Problems

There are a few different airway obstruction conditions that may or may not be a problem for your bulldog. A small windpipe, nostrils that are too small or a elongated soft palate which can swell and block the wind pipe. These things are able to be fixed with surgery.

When dogs get hot they pant to release the heat from their body. Since Bulldogs have such a short nose, it's much harder for them to keep themselves from overheating. These dogs tend to get a little too excited which can also cause some breathing issues. If there is excessive barking or panting, their throats can swell causing respiratory issues.

Too much exercise or strenuous activities can cause your bulldog to overheat so you don't want to push it. You will get to know their comfort level the more time you spend with him or her.

English Bulldogs

English Bulldogs can surprise you with their athletic capabilities. They have a very broad but short build so they appear very stocky. Bulldogs have very big heads and an underbite that just adds to their cuteness. They have long flap like jowls that hang down over their teeth. Their appearance can be intimidating but don't let that fool you. They are very kind, gentle and for the most part dog training comes easy with these cute little beasts.

Bulldogs often have problems with drooling (like many other dogs), snoring they may slobber just a bit. What dog doesn't though right? The Bulldog makes a great family pet but they do prefer to be the only dog in the house.
